“Between you and I, I feel badly for these kids,” they tell me. “The whole school system has gone to hell…” If the speaker is over 53 , I look at him skeptically. If he is my age or younger, I know he’s full of baloney. As far as I can tell, there never was a golden age of spelling, and if there was, it was definitely before 1986, the year I started teaching.
